My Name Is Bimbo

‘Ms Bimbo, I notice you giggle and fidget each time during the near-fifteen minutes we have been engaging, struggling to give suitable responses (if at all) to questions asked you…I’m not sure we should keep at this pace. Interview deferred.’
These were my words at the point I had to terminate this particular interview to save my time and also move on with other candidates who direly needed an interview opportunity.
I often sit on interview panels trying to assess the suitability of prospective hires in various capacities. Regrettably I find this function extremely draining, dismal and often annoying. You will appreciate why.
I come across several young graduates who are desperately looking for employment in the corporate environment. These dreams, get curtailed somewhat because candidates are just not impressive. I have reviewed over a 1000 CVs which look quite remarkable, however it has often turned out, the ink and paper are all there are to the authors of those testimonials.
Bimbo earns an interview opportunity. 9.00am was her appointment on Friday March 30, 2012. She shows up rather enthusiastically and on time. Here she is:
She magnificently emerges from a self-chauffeured sleek, charcoal-grey 2012 registered Range Rover Evoque. I happened to be at the staff car park and wondered to myself who this lady could be. I immediately assumed she was a client, but never imagined her as a job-seeker.
Tall, stylish, slender and elegant. Strikingly gorgeous, dark-skinned 16-inch fake-haired woman, occasionally appearing shy, beautifully dressed up in seemingly expensive clothes, shoes and accessories. Her fragrance filled the foyer getting staff nosing surreptitiously to find out who was here and what they were up to.
I get into my office, a telephone call follows: Front office person: ‘madam, the interview candidates are in; can the first person come?’ “Sure…” I related.
The same lady I had seen at the car park is the one who walks into my office. The whole office lit up. ‘Hello, you are welcome…how are you…please sit, Ma’am?’ I said heartily. In all of this the young lady appeared struck and had not said a word.
She slips into the seat across my table and then I say again. ‘You are very welcome. My name is Louisa… I shall be interacting with you on your suitability for the position of a Business Analyst…What’s your name?’
‘Bimbo… Bimbo Williams.’ At this point she had begun wavering, as though she was unsure of her name. Then I say: ‘Introduce yourself to me. I’m interested in tertiary and what you’ve been up to since…’
She smiled grimly and started ‘errmm, errmm, o-okay-y, I actually went to Legon. I read BSc Admin, Accounting option….errmm, errmm, I…I need a job, because I finished my national service 2 years ago, and I…I’m…just at home.’
I ask inquisitively. ‘What is Legon? What happens there? Then she giggled and goes, ‘Madam, please Legon is the university I went to… ahaaa…’
Then I ask again, Ma’am, explain to me the relevance of 3 accounting concepts when you are assessing the truth & fairness of the financials of a client who needs a loan from you’
At this question, Bimbo got very fidgety and begun fumbling badly. This was about the third question I had asked and had not gotten any intelligent response. This is her answer:. ‘Errmm Madam, hmm, I’ll try. Errmm Madam, I guess you have to be God fearing, honest…’ my jaw dropped.
Sadly Bimbo’s session lasted for only 11minutes. 11 minutes exactly.  This was because she looked good only on CV. She was shamefully lacking in a significant chunk of smart staff attribute. I wondered how she managed to obtain her degree. Her responses were shallow, inconsistent, incoherent and immature. She could not do tables in Ms word; totally lost her way in excel and could not make out the icon for PowerPoint.
Bimbo, a proud university graduate… here she is uncut:
·         Could not express self, tenses were poor.
·         Fumbled continuously.
·         Lacked the basic knowledge in the job role she had applied for.
·         Lacked wit & situational judgment
·         Lacked confidence (because she did not know much)
·         Lacked computer proficiency.
For Bimbo, once she had completed the university, she definitely must find a job, and it had to be in a financial institution.
I have seen quite a few Bimbos in my working life; not all female though.  They are just not that useful in the corporate world.
In the financial institutions, it is very serious business and therefore one has got to be on top of their game.
Though training is provided, at entry point one must know their ABCs and 123s.
Reality
Most students, (MBAs inclusive) have only acquired the certificate. They know absolutely nothing. They are unable to pass interviews and therefore cannot find jobs.
There are 1000s of employers looking for skill and expertise to hire, but truth is, these qualities are hard to find during interviews.
Challenge
Candidates are simply unable to cross the interview border and therefore do not secure the white-collar jobs they so desire; hence the lamentations of unemployment all over the place.
Admonishing
Folks, do not be in a hurry to finish school and be called a graduate and other professional titles.
Do not hurry to seek exemptions to shorten your instructional hours in the university. Do not absent yourself from lectures and think you will get question leaks or favours with lecturers to mark you up.
You need the discipline. You need the knowledge. If you dash through school, you will be even more frustrated in the end, because you will think you have a certain qualification, but truly, you do not have the requisite knowledge in that job role to perform.
With your half-baked knowledge, you may either not find a job at all; OR even if you do, you may soon lose it because your shallow knowledge cannot sustain you in any serious, successful, world class corporate institution.
Bimbo, your name means beautiful but unintelligent; and indeed you are. I’m sorry though, that beauty may soon fade away.
Way to Go
Intelligence, wit, knowledge are what will sustain and propel you in any job environment.
Bimbo, it is not sustainable to use your beauty to hunt people to give you hand outs and dole money on you.
Hard work, intelligence and knowledge will build your confidence and confidence will take you places.
I deferred your interview so you can go back to school and retrain.
When you are done, we shall have another interview and hopefully you will get the job you so desire.
Till then, have a fruitful back-to-school programme.

  1. It is such a shame! Many square pegs have been put in round holes and as a result are not performing at all in the workplaces, sake of this so called "whom you know " business in Ghana.I believe there are more competent people out there who can really prove themselves at interview, but are just not getting the opportunity because they dont know anybody. Why should this be the case? Why can't there be fairness in Ghana.People are now buying certificates and degrees in the Universities so how can we get qualified graduates to work.Bimbo has to sit up!It really a shame

  2. Well, I'm not surprised at all, can you believe this, some CV's I recently reviewed even had INTRODUCTION & EXECUTIVE SUMMARY as headers and I wonder if indeed they were taught in their research methodology class, to do on their CV's. As we celebrate Easter, permit me to rephrase the words of our Lord Jesus who died to save us, perhaps with these words, you may consider shortlisting them: 'Recruiter, forgive them for they dont know what they have done wrong'. (Prince Kuwornu).

  3. Beautiful piece...We have all skipped lectures and done a lot of stuff in our university days that we are not proud of with respect acquiring of knowledge. But i am glad that someone has been able to address some of the problems that has really slowed down productivity in our corporate world.Individuals should learn to understand and prepare themselves for the complicated and every changing world that we live in.

  4. This is a good read, though very uncharitable towards the poor girl. Yes, I understand how frustrating it is when an interview seems to be a total waste of time. But hey, how did Bimbo get shortlisted for the role of a Business Analyst in the first place when all she had in her career history was some national service experience...which was completed two years ago? I would say the question on assessing truth and fairness isn't fair anyway, given that the interviewee would obviously have no clue about this.
But then again, no candidate is a complete idiot, and it takes a lot of skill to get an interviewee to relax and identify the strengths of even the most bashful and idiotic-seeming candidate. .....and I'm sure that even Bimbo with her low self confidence, lack of work experience and inability to operate Excel would have some positive attributes.....aside her beauty. I've come to appreciate that performance in interviews do not necessarily always translate into great performance on the job. For entry level positions, candidates I've interviewed from Oxford and Imperial have always stood tall. However, the less impressive candidates we have recruited 'just to fill the space' have rather turned out to be the real high flyers on the job. Now, the difficult task of the interviewer is how to see through the strengths and weaknesses of your candidates during the 30minute chat.

  5. I have always asked the question does interviews really produce the right candidate and is university degree(s) the only answer to the corporate world? And the unfortunate age as determining factor

  6. Hmmmmm. There is an after school activity in my son's school called BACK TO BASICS. It helps the children to remember the things they were thought when they started creche, and cant remember now that they have moved up. I believe most of us have to go BACK TO THE BASICS in our chosen professions. it might seem now to be time wasting, but it will go a long way to help your tomorrow. Bimbo imagine yourself with all that elegance and the brains to match it. Hmmmmmm the sky will not be your limit but your starting point. pls go BACK TO THE BASICS. I HAVE Asor

  7. Great read. Question is what should we expect when pamphlets are made and sold to university students and failed when they do not purchase them? Again, today's Student has a short cut view to education: buying questions, grades, lectures etc. and forgetting that every book read prepares one for the bigger challenge ahead.
Not until these are addressed, we will have more of such Bimbos

  8. Interesting. I have interviewed a lot of people in my line of work and have found a lot of our graduates ill prepared and lacking basic skills and so I can understand your frustration. I am however not too sure how your description of her car and fake hair plays into all this. It suggests that you were prejudiced. I have been shocked a few times myself by how smart some "Bimbolike" candidates have turned out. She sure has something going for her if she is unemployed and driving such an expensive car. Dont write her off.

  9. Ok, so the take-home message from this post and the comments..
    FOR THE INTERVIEWEE
1.Prepare for the interview. Excelling in an interview is an art. You can score a 100% in an interview and not know jack about the job, so long as you prepare
    2. By all means, dress for the job. Yes! But never, ever ever EVER overdress.... especially if you are a lady and your interviewer is also going to be a lady. You dont want to bring in your sleekest car, show off your new thousand cedi hair-do and perfume. If you do that, chances are that you are going to be asked to explain "the relevance of 3 accounting concepts when assessing the truth & fairness of the financials of a client who needs a loan". Your options? Dont overdress, or find the answer to this question and others that will follow. Note: they will be questions that the interviewer knows you cant answer!
    3) Dont dream of looking for a job in 2012 if you can operate the MS Office package, especially Word, Excel and Ppt. You will get a straight walk-out if you cant do this. And remember, Facebook is not included in the MS Office Package.
    4) Appear wise and confident, even if you are not. If you dont know the answer to a question, clearly say so. Remember, there is an art of saying "I dont know". Never blurt out these three words as a response to a question in an interview. You can say "I dont know" in a way that sounds intelligent, by confidently telling them what you do know related to the question before explaining that you havent read about the question in particular, but that you would do so (and even offer to give a feedback later). Prepare how you will say this ahead of your interview (chances are that there will be at least a question that you cant answer).

    FOR THE INTERVIEWER
    1) Interviewing is an art! Learn it!
    2) Confidence in an interview is not equal to competence on the job....the same way that a brilliant CV doesnt translate into a great interview; or excellence in school doesnt translate into a great CV.
    3) It takes skill to be able to identify the real strengths and weaknesses of the interviewee.
    4) A completely intimidated interviewee only points to one thing- A bad interviewer. Learn to get the most of your candidates by connecting with them and making them comfortable and able to relate to you. Only then can you assess them fairly. That may be hard to do in the corporrate setting in Ghana where the boss always has to look like a superman!
    5) Offering someone a job doesnt meab you are doing them a favour! Being nice in an interview doesnt mean you are doing the candidate a favour! Why! You are doing your company a favour by being able to recruit the right person for the job, not the right person for performing in interviews (in any case, if they are excellent in interviews, they wouldnt mind attending a few more after you have given them the job and invested your resources in training them, anyway!)
    6) Hard as it may be, the car, make-up, hair or perfume of the candidate should not affect the tempo of the interview. Well, its hard if you are a male interviewer with gorgeous candidate you may be biased in her favour. It's even harder if you are a female interviewer with a gorgeous candidate!!! You WILL be biased against her.....

    1. Impressive, well thought out & on point Paa ! For me, I surmise from the account of the whole interview that in as much as some candidates can be truely ''Bimbolike'', this particular interview was flawed with INTERVIEWER BIAS & PREJUDICE, possible intimidation and a shortlisting and selection process or system which most likely is arbitrary and thus lack integrity. From the frequent interruptions of the interviewer of the candidate as the picture is painted in the story, it also shows that the interviewer did not give the candidate a fair chance at answering questions; the interview is not the chance for the interviewer to show how much they know though corrections and pieces of advice are not out of place. The interview is the chance to be given the candidate to showcase potential. A confident candidate is totally exciting and desirable and it is for the professional interviewer or recruiter to know that there's is the need to connect (or even try to connect) with the candidate is important. The interview is not an execution. A good interviewer knows when to call of the steam and give a candidate a break !

Recruitment is a process not an event and the interview is part of the process to help make sound judgments about the candidate. I am certain this Bimbo candidate may be judged differently by a different interviewer based on the approach or circumstances or even better if there was a panel ( I suppose Bimbo faced a one-man, one- off panel- which most of the time does not present the most accurate opinion of a candidate).

Organisations which desire to stay on top need to pay attention to their human resources, especially recruitment processes because it is the beginning and end of most organisational troubles.

AND IN AS MUCH SOME JOBSEEKERS NEED A BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAM, SOME INTERVIEWERS OR RECRUITERS EQUALLY NEED ONE, TOO.
